Hello Friends,
The term sympathetic nervous system has always confused me! Sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is a component of the autonomic nervous system that acts as the body's rapid involuntary response mechanism, or "flight-or-fight" system. Whereas, the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) is a division of the autonomic nervous system that acts as the body's "rest & digest" system, conserving energy and maintaining daily homeostasis. “Sympathetic” feels like it should come with a hug, but instead it comes with adrenaline!
A major role our Yoga practice plays in our lives is helping us tap into our parasympathetic nervous system. Sadly we spend a lot of time in our SNS, unintentionally. We're always on the go and stretching our resources in this rapidly changing world. At some point we forget to breathe.
Just this past weekend I was smacked in the face with a reminder that I needed to breathe. Saturday morning before class I found myself on the verge of a panic attack. The year of the Fire Horse seems to be starting with a bang! Feeling completely overwhelmed trying to prepare for class, Cindy asked me how I was. I have no poker face. She had me sit down with her in our Yogamour nook, close my eyes as she led me through about 5 minutes of breathwork to bring me back into my PNS. I was so grateful. I don't think I would have been able to teach without it.
Life happens and it can be overwhelming! Breathing will help.
With gratitude,
Jaime and The Yogamour Team
